There are three types of patents: Utility Patents, Design Patents, and Plant Patents.
Generally, the term for a utility patent runs from the date the patent is granted untill 20 years after the filing date of the patent application, but not less than 17 years.
A patent confers to the inventor only the right to exclude others from making, using, selling, importing, or offering an invention for sale.
